3 reasons Seattle Seahawks should be concerned vs. Lions Week 17
The Seattle Seahawks are stumbling into the final stretch of the season with back-to-back losses against the Rams and Bears.
Although the Lions are one of the league’s worst teams with a (2-12-1) record, the Seahawks are now struggling against bad teams.
Here are three Seahawks reasons to be concerned this weekend.
Seattle Seahawks: 3 concerns versus the Lions in Week 17
1. The Seahawks continue to lose time of possession
Seattle has been one of the worst teams in the league at maintaining possession on offense this season. They currently are ranked last in time of possession averaging a little less than 25 minutes of ball control per game. Pete Carroll’s teams have usually been focused on keeping possession of the ball, committing fewer turnovers, and being able to run the football.
This year, they have not been able to do that, with injuries at running back, and struggles with run blocking. Converting on third down has also contributed to Seattle’s inability to sustain drives. The Seahawks rank last in the NFL on third down conversions, converting on just 33.73 percent of third downs.
2. The Seahawks defense continues to struggle at creating turnovers
Pete Carroll not only cares about taking care of the football, but he also stresses the need for the defense to take the ball away. Seattle has been unable to do that this year, as they have only created 14 takeaways which ranks 27th in the league. This is unusual for Pete Carroll’s defenses during his time in Seattle.
The Seahawks defense has struggled at being able to create short fields for their offense or scoring defensive touchdowns this season. For a team that ranks 20th in scoring on offense, the Seahawks defense is not doing much to help the offense create more scoring opportunities.
3. The Seahawks are in turmoil
Seattle has certainly had their share of struggles on the field, and those issues have now caused headaches off the field as well. Russell Wilson appears to be unhappy with the current state of the Seahawks as well as owner Jody Allen. Wilson made it clear last offseason he was willing to accept trades to five different teams and now there are rumors he wants to be traded to New York.
Jody Allen stated publicly a few weeks ago she was not happy with how the team has been performing in 2021. With the questions about Seattle’s future in doubt and Seattle’s struggles this season on the field, it is hard to know how motivated Seattle will be in these last two games.
Although on paper Seattle should have no problem against the Lions, last week’s loss against a hapless Bears’ team proved the Seahawks should take no team for granted. To avoid another embarrassing loss Seattle will need to bring their best game for the last home contest of the season. Also, do not forget the Lions recently beat the heavily favored Arizona Cardinals in week 15.
