Why Vic Fangio would be a great fit as Seahawks defensive coordinator

Vic Fangio did not work out as a head coach in the NFL.  In 3 seasons with the Denver Broncos, he coached the team to 7-9, 5-11, and 7-10 records before he was inevitably fired after the 2022 regular season ended.  The reason his teams were not great was definitely not because of defensive shortcomings. The Seattle Seahawks could benefit from Fangio being fired.

Fangio is a defensive coach. Point blank period.  He was not fired because he couldn’t figure out the defenses.  He was fired because he couldn’t figure out the quarterback.  In fact, his Denver defenses were quite good.

Fangio also drafted well on the defensive side of the ball, with players like Patrick Surtain II, Caden Sterns, and Bradley Chubb.  He also developed players like Justin Simmons into great talents on defense.

Seahawks should hire Vic Fangio to fix the defense

So, what exactly is my point here?

I think Fangio would be a nice fit as defensive coordinator of the Seattle Seahawks.  Previous to his stint as Denver head coach, Fangio was defensive coordinator in San Francisco from 2011-2014, as well as defensive coordinator for Chicago from 2015-2018.

In San Francisco, Fangio demonstrated his defensive mastery as his defenses were continually ranked near the top of the league in most defensive categories, and he also produced many pro bowlers as well as all-pros.  Even when San Francisco struggled as a team in 2014 going 8-8, Fangio’s defense still ranked top 5 in yards allowed.

He had much of the same success coaching defense in Chicago, so much so that Denver gave him the head coaching job in 2019.  So, despite not having success as a head coach, Fangio has proven his mastery of the defensive side of the ball at every stop he’s taken as a defensive coordinator.

I think he would be a great fit as the Seahawks defensive coordinator, as he could step in and fix our defensive schemes and start to get our defense back to the dominance of the Legion of Boom days.
