4 potential cap casualties Seahawks should sign in free agency
By Lee Vowell
Jarvis Landry, receiver
Seattle, of course, already has DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett at receiver and both those guys are great. After Metcalf and Lockett, though, there is quite a bit of uncertainty, ineffectiveness and inconsistency. Dee Eskridge might turn out to be a decent player but in his rookie season this past year, he was hurt a bunch (Eskridge missed 7 games) and finished with just 10 catches and a paltry 6.4 yards per catch. Seattle needs to find a good slot receiver.
Landry didn’t have a great year in 2021 but is still just 29 years old. He missed 5 games this past season but before that missed just one game in seven years. He also has had three years of at least 1,136 yards receiving. His career catch rate per target is 65.8 percent which is decent for a slot receiver.
Landry does have 20 fumbles in his career but 7 of those came in his rookie season of 2014. Between 2015 and 2019, Landry made the Pro Bowl every year. He is a good player.
Landry’s current team, the Cleveland Browns, has a decent amount of cap room this offseason ($23 million) but releasing Landry would only cost the team $1.5 million in dead cap while saving the team $14.88 million. The math would suggest Cleveland should let Landry go.
