Seattle Seahawks grab a local cornerback in NFL mock draft
By Lee Vowell
The Seattle Seahawks have the 8th-most cap space in the NFL this offseason but are going to have to spend some of that money on re-signing some of their own free agents. One group in particular, the secondary, has several key players that Seattle has to make decisions about.
In Sharp Football Analysis’ latest 2022 NFL mock draft, the Seahawks are predicted to take University of Washington cornerback Kyler Gordon with the 41st overall pick. According to writer Ryan McCrystal, “Kyler Gordon has the length Seattle typically likes, and his slot/outside versatility adds to his value.”
The question for 2022, of course, would be how ready Gordon is to play. The Seahawks could potentially lose corners D.J. Reed and Sidney Jones as both are free agents. Reed has been Seattle’s corner for the last two years. Jones got better as the 2021 season wore on. Pro Football Focus graded Jones as the 26th-best CB in the NFL this past year.
Seattle Seahawks drafting Kyler Gordon would give them a corner with great athleticism
But the 6-feet, 200 pound Gordon is big enough to play outside and play pressure man, if the Seahawks get back to that. His career might start, though, in 2022 as a slot corner. Marquise Blair has shown some promise there the last two seasons for the Seahawks but can’t stay healthy. Ugo Amadi was awful in 2021. Gordon could be a starter there by Week 4 of 2022.
According to NFL.com, Gordon’s comparison would be Byron Jones. Jones has had a pretty decent career and made the Pro Bowl in 2018 but he doesn’t pick the ball off very much. One issue the Seahawks had in 2021 was that for most of the season no one was intercepting passes except the safeties. Seattle needs a corner who can create turnovers. Gordon had his first 2 interceptions in college last year for the Huskies.
There is a chance, however, that Gordon might end up being dynamic at the NFL combine this week. He is a very gifted athlete and that is going to show up in combine skills. If he still does fall to Seattle at pick 41 and Seattle takes him, one thing is clear: The Seahawks will be drafting a great athlete. Then Gordon would just need to turn into a great NFL corner.
