Top five Seattle Seahawks free agents that need to be re-signed in 2022
By Geoff Shull
Priority No. 3 to re-sign: Duane Brown, LT
Duane Brown did not have a good year in 2021, especially in the first half of the season. He was a liability just as often as he was the stalwart for the offensive line. He averaged an abysmal one sack or penalty allowed per 78 offensive snaps (just about one per game). This was the worst on the offensive line.
However, I don’t see many other options for Seattle right now. The draft has some great options for left tackle. however, they are all developmental and won’t be ready in year one. The coaching staff doesn’t seem high on Stone Forsythe.
Of the players I actually expect to make it to free agency, I don’t see much of an upgrade over a known entity like Duane Brown. For Seattle, it seems clear, Duane Brown is their best option at left tackle for 2022.
Also, let me make this clear: I think 2021 was a fluke. I think the holdout really caused an issue with Brown’s conditioning. He was thrown directly from working out in his basement to being in real game action against other grown men. I think his game struggled as a result.
Holdouts rarely help either party. In this case, it hurt both sides. Brown didn’t get a new (longer) contract and Seattle got less than stellar play from their blind-side blocker.
That being said, both Seattle and Brown are open to a new contract. Brown acknowledges that he may have to accept a one-year deal. Seattle, meanwhile, hasn’t closed the door on a multi-year deal. I think as a stop-gate player for 2022, this is a perfect scenario.
A realistic contract offer for Duane Brown: 2 years, $21 million
