Wednesday at the NFL combine the head coach of the Seattle Seahawks, Pete Carroll had this to say about his star quarterback when asked by reporters: “Teams call to ask about Russell Wilson, General Manager John Schneider tells them Wilson is not available.”

This should officially lay to rest all the trade speculation behind Russell Wilson.

Recently on an interview with NBC’s Today program, Wilson doubled-down by saying he loves Seattle, it’s where he wants to be and he’s not interested in leaving at this time.

Seahawks unlikely to be trading Russell Wilson this offseason

2022 is not the year to be in the market for a quarterback. Being the only team in the last decade to lose a future Hall of Famer without a guaranteed backup would be an absolute stain on the Seahawks.

The next order of business is knowing that Russell Wilson will remain with the Seahawks means that contract extension talks need to begin soon. Russell Wilson has two seasons left on his current deal and Seattle needs to put to rest any talk of possibly trading him next offseason as well.

According to Over The Cap, Russell Wilson has a $37 million hit to Seattle’s cap space in 2021. $26 million of that is dead money which means there’s an $11 million savings. Considering that Russell Wilson has proven to be an ironman on the field along with the fact that Pete, John, and Russ all mentioned they want Russell here for the duration of his career, now would be an excellent opportunity to extend his contract and not wait for Aaron Rodgers to reset the market.

Even if Seattle chose not to extend Wilson, it would be wise to ask him to restructure this offseason. According to Over The Cap, restructuring Wilson’s contract would save the team $11,440,000 toward the team’s cap in 2022. This offseason is still shaping up and there still might be twists and turns to come when it comes to Russell Wilson.
