The Seattle Seahawks reportedly traded Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos on Tuesday. What Seattle might get back in return isn’t enough, at least as far as Ian Rapoport reports Seattle is getting in return.

Per Rapoport, in return for Russell Wilson and a fourth-round pick, the Seahawks will get two first-rounders and two second-round picks, a fifth-rounder, quarterback Drew Lock, defensive end Shelby Harris and tight end Noah Fant. If this is the case, Seattle is going to not be good for a long time.

First of all, a quarterback can make or break a franchise. Seattle doesn’t have one currently. Drew Lock? He has massively underperformed since he joined the NFL in 2019. Lock actually led the league in interceptions in 2020 with 15 but in only 443 attempts but had just 16 touchdown passes. Wilson, in contrast, threw just 13 interceptions in 558 attempts but had 40 touchdown passes.

Seahawks may have gotten hosed by Broncos in trade for Russell Wilson

Seattle isn’t going to be better in 2022; they are going to be worse so be ready for that 12s. The hope is that the Seahawks will be better in 2023 and beyond. The issue is that even though Seattle is getting those first-round picks and second-round picks back, John Schneider and Pete Carroll have not proven they can be good with those picks. Seattle has historically been horrible with early picks under Schneider.

While Russell Wilson being traded might be a reaction to Aaron Rodgers re-signing in Green Bay for $200 million over four seasons and Seattle not wanting to extend Russell Wilson after 2023, Seattle seems to have chosen Schneider and Carroll over Wilson. Wilson has been with the team since 2012 so whatever success the Seahawks have had with Carroll and Schneider corresponds with Russell Wilson being a Seahawk.

We don’t know that Seattle can be good even with Carroll and Schneider without Wilson. 12s do know Seattle isn’t good with early picks. The bet is that Schneider and Carroll can suddenly remake the franchise with solid early picks and not have Russell Wilson at quarterback to lead the team. That doesn’t seem like a safe bet currently.
