4 Seahawks who don’t deserve another season with the team in 2022
By Almar Reyes
QB Geno Smith
With Russ gone, it is anybody’s guess on who will start for the Seahawks at center this season. He has huge shoes to fill and whoever drops back there on the field will have their work cut out for them.
When Russell Wilson required surgery on his middle finger after Week 5 last season, Geno filled in admirably for three games. The win-loss result was not there but he was able to manage their games well. It is easy for the Seahawks to just sign Geno back as a step gap QB this year but it is not the ideal situation. Seattle acquired QB Drew Lock from Denver and having two sub-par quarterbacks battling for the starting job will not be well-received by Seattle faithful who are still raging from seeing their franchise quarterback traded.
After a monumental shift in the organization, the Seahawks cannot enter this season with a mediocre battle for the starting job. Geno is a good backup quarterback but not a starter. He will be better off serving back up to another proven quarterback from another team instead of battling to be a starter to a rebuilding Seattle team.
If Seattle proceeds to go in the direction of selecting a rookie quarterback in this year’s rookie draft, Geno Smith is not the type of quarterback Seattle wants to mentor their young quarterback either. It is easy to be enticed with Geno Smith after how he performed in Russ’ absence, but let him find a suitable job somewhere else.
