5 bold predictions for Seahawks from now through the 2022 draft
By Geoff Shull
Prediction number 2: There is a very specific reason why Seahawks kicker Jason Myers is still rostered.
The Seahawks have had a very difficult time replacing Steven Hauschka’s production since his departure. They have turned in all directions to find the answer. Most recently, they turned to Jason Myers.
Myers is in a position that is hard to play. There is virtually no fanfare. He plays for maybe two minutes total per game. Yet, he is expected to be warmed up and rearing to go the second his number is called. The kicker spot is known for being a very heady position.
A position where the player has to have a ridiculous amount of confidence in oneself. A position that can’t afford to allow one’s mind off the game for one second. It is because of this that Pete Carroll has both been very supportive of Jason Myers, even when he struggled.
One would expect the media to be all over the thought of cutting a struggling kicker with a $5 million cap hit. However, it’s been silent. I think the team has its eyes set on one kicker in this draft.
Cade York is easily the top kicker in this class. He is just one of 3 kickers to make a 50+ yard field goal in the final seconds of a game since the start of 2020, per Pro Football Network. He is also deadly accurate.
I think the Seahawks are looking at their 5th round pick with an earmark to grab York, much in the way they grabbed Michael Dickson in the 5th round several years ago.
The team can’t afford this kind of distraction to affect Myers’ game if they miss out on York. So, they are keeping a low profile hoping York makes it to them.
