3 moves Seahawks should make Tuesday to improve 2022

Sign Jadeveon Clowney
Seattle released Carlos Dunlap and Benson Mayowa and maybe it’s because they don’t fit perfectly into a 3-4. A 3-4 base seems to be a lot more of what the Seahawks are going to use moving forward. But Clowney has the talent to excel in either a 4-3 or 3-4 as he can be a pure defensive end or a linebacker. Plus, besides putting decent pressure on quarterbacks, Clowney is fantastic against the run.
The issue with Clowney has never been talent; He has an abundance of that. He just needs to stay healthier. In 2021, Clowney played 14 games, had 9 sacks, 19 quarterback hits and 11 tackles-for-loss. He was very good and the sacks and QB hits would have led the Seahawks this past season.
Seattle needs to offer Clowney something that allows for stability. Instead of a one-year deal, maybe offer him a three-year contract. He will be expensive, yes. But not a lot of teams still have money to give Clowney a big contract; Seattle still has some cap flexibility.
And while it seems like Clowney should be 56 years old at this point, he is only 29. He should have several good seasons ahead of him.
There is no point in thinking Clowney will ever play a full season but except in 2020, he has played in at least 13 since 2015. He gets injured but that isn’t as dire as some might make it appear. Adding Clowney means waiting until the second round for an edge rusher with Darrell Taylor still on the team.
