The NFL announced who will be announcing third-round picks for teams in the 2022 draft. For the Seattle Seahawks, Shaquem Griffin will be making the choice.

To be fair, I wish Griffin was still playing in the NFL. And I wish he was still playing for the Seahawks. I think that Griffin would be a better fit in a 3-4 system under new defensive coordinator Clint Hurtt than Griffin was under former DC Ken Norton, Jr.

Heck, Griffin is still young enough that maybe he comes back to Seattle and plays a part of the defense or special teams. He was certainly a good enough special teams player to make an impact on most teams. Griffin was a fifth-round choice in 2018 for the Seahawks.

But let’s be honest. Griffin is almost too inspirational for the NFL. His true impact is made off the field. Yes, he overcame a childhood illness to keep playing football, was great in the locker room and on the field in college and then joined the Seahawks where he was good on special teams and then had a fantastic human moment in the playoffs against Green Bay in the 2019 season.

Against the Packers, Giffin and his twin brother Shaquill, combined on a sack of Aaron Rodgers. Shaquem showed off his finishing speed and looked good enough to be an impact player. But NFL teams simply haven’t found a way to use the one-hand player.

Griffin hasn’t played since 2020 with Seattle. He signed with the Dolphins before last season but didn’t play.

In Griffin’s three-year career, Griffin had a sack, 6 quarterback hits and a tackle-for-loss. If used in pass-rushing downs, Griffin could probably get to 4 or 5 sacks in a year. But Griffin is probably better off the field and inspiring people who don’t have the same advantages as the rest of us.
