Early predictions for who starts for the Seattle Seahawks in 2022
By Lee Vowell
Defense
Defensive line – Shelby Harris (defensive end), Poona Ford (nose guard), Quinton Jefferson (defensive end)
There is going to be a lot of rotation along the defensive line this year but I think these guys start. The most obvious one is Ford is an excellent run stopper and built to be a nose guard. Harris came over as part of the Wilson trade and can put decent pressure on the quarterback. Jefferson returns after a couple of seasons away and can play the run and pass about equally as well.
But the Seahawks are clearly transitioning to a 3-4 which means putting pressure on opposing quarterbacks is going to come from the 4 part of that instead of the 3.
Linebacker – Jordyn Brooks, Cody Barton, Darrell Taylor, Uchenna Nwosu
Barton should feel the happiest of any Seahawk about the 2022 draft. Seattle didn’t choose a linebacker which appears to show they are content with Barton replacing Bobby Wagner in the middle of the defense. Brooks could be a Pro Bowler this year. Taylor and Nwosu should supply a lot more QB pressure than the Seahawks have had in a while.
Cornerbacks – Tre Brown and Sidney Jones (Justin Coleman at slot corner)
Because this is the modern NFL and teams throw a lot more, Seattle might end up going with 3-3-5 more often than not. This means replacing a linebacker with a corner. Or Seattle might choose to go with a more 4-2-5 front and move Taylor, Nwosu or the recently drafted Boye Mafe to the LEO spot. Once Seattle does this, Coleman should play the slot as he is really good at it.
Jones played well in the second half of 2021 and Brown looked promising in limited time. There is a chance that Coby Bryant beats out either Jones or Brown, however.
Safeties – Quandre Diggs and Jamal Adams
Well, this is a safe bet, right? If Adams and Diggs are healthy enough to play in Week 1, they are the starters. The only question is whether the Seahawks get super creative and on passing downs move Adams to more of a linebacker role and have Ryan Neal play strong safety.
