Seahawks news for your Sunday includes the sadness of Earl Thomas, that Seattle was high on quarterback Sam Howell and Pete Carroll becomes a doctor.

Let me start by saying I am not a doctor myself and saying that Carroll’s bit of news may not require him to be called one himself. But Carroll is still smarter than I am, as probably are you.

Also, DK Metcalf, not part of this news piece, still needs to have his contract extended. Enough said about that.

Seahawks news for your Sunday with Dr. Pete

Earl Thomas arrested

Former Seahawks safety Earl Thomas is having a whole bunch of off-the-field issues lately. Last month, Thomas had a warrant issued over an alleged protective order violation. Thomas, according to police, violated a court order by sending threatening messages to his estranged wife. Thomas has reportedly violated the protective order two or more times in the last year and this is a third-degree felony in Texas.

Thomas was arrested on Friday. He has not played in the NFL since 2020 when Thomas was released by the Baltimore Ravens for reportedly punching a teammate.

Sam Howell, not your Seahawks QB of the future

Some of the staff in Seattle, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, really liked North Carolina quarterback Sam Howell and wanted to take him in the 2022 NFL draft. Clearly, this did not happen and Howell waited until the fifth round to be taken by the Washington Commanders.

Seattle, of course, did not take a QB in this year’s draft and appears set on giving Drew Lock a real chance to earn the job long-term. Also, it says a lot that the Seahawks had multiple chances to take Howell, even after the second round, but did not. So, if they liked him, it wasn’t very much. Plus, not taking a QB in 2022 was the right thing to do.

Pete Carroll, you can call him Doctor

Finally, Carroll was given an honorary doctorate degree by his alma mater, the University of Pacific, this week. The degree is one of the highest honors that the university can give out. But let’s not pretend that Carroll couldn’t have earned the doctorate on his own had he tried.

Carroll already holds a master’s degree in physical education and has a teaching certification. As we all know, though, Carroll’s real teaching job has been molding many a defensive back in the NFL into great players.
