Seattle Seahawks: 15 best wide receivers in franchise history
By Lee Vowell
14. Daryl Turner
Turner played from Seattle from 1984 through 1987 and never played again after that. He had just 101 receptions in his four years but his efficiency in those seasons was ridiculous. Not that he came close to leading the NFL in yards or catches but with what he did in that number of receptions is astonishing.
Turner had a couple of issues that likely kept him from greatness long-term but more on that in just a minute. First, let’s examine just how productive Turner was immediately after being drafted by Seattle in the second round of the 1984 draft.
In his rookie year, Turner broke the franchise record for yards-per-reception at a staggering 20.4. He only had 35 catches but 10 of them were for touchdowns. He finished third in the AP’s Rookie of the Year voting. At Michigan State, Turner was big and fast (6’3″ and a sub-4.4 40) and he seemed faster once he entered the NFL.
In year two, he caught one fewer pass but had a league-leading 13 touchdown catches. Through 32 NFL games, Turner had 23 touchdown catches on only 69 receptions. But then Turner’s issues overcame him and in the final two years of his career (even though he still had 13 touchdown catches in 32 receptions), he diminished. Turner had a drug problem and it killed his NFL career.
But it didn’t kill Turner and he currently lives in Michigan and talks to young people about addiction and he is clean and sober. And while he only played for Seattle for four years, he still ranks 6th in touchdown catches with 36.
