Seahawks OC Shane Waldron said DK Metcalf needs to get his touches. Well, yeah, but let’s make sure he gets them at the right time. We’ll talk about who’s responsible to make sure that happens, too.

Seahawks offensive coordinator Shane Waldron made some headlines recently with his comments about the Seahawks offense. Waldron said that Geno Smith is ahead of Drew Lock at this point.  Geno’s had about 17 months in Waldron’s system. Lock has been with the Hawks for about six weeks. As Lee Vowell wrote, Smith better be ahead of Lock, or there’s a serious problem.

Waldron also said that he sees getting the ball to DK Metcalf more often as a priority for the Seahawks. As quoted by Gregg Bell in The News Tribune, “With DK’s skill set, that’s something we are striving to do, is get DK his touches,” Waldron said. “Because that’s going to make us a better offense… “I put that on us.” Well yes, that is on the Seahawks; and to be more specific, it’s on Shane Waldron. But there’s much more to it than simply getting DK the ball more often.

Seahawks can make much better use of DK Metcalf

Waldron is right, of course. Getting the ball to DK Metcalf more will improve the Seahawks offense. That would seem to be one of the more obvious observations possible. Just one example is the Hawks inept, confounding, and mystifying loss to Washington last year.

Metcalf wasn’t targeted a single time in the first half. The Hawks finally threw the ball his way four times in the second half and completed one pass. As Kevin Patra wrote for nfl.com, the Seahawks weren’t exactly facing the Legion of Boom.
