Seahawks cornerback Coby Bryant

Seattle basically has a wide-open competition for starting cornerback in 2022, especially at outside corner. We might assume that Tre Brown and Sidney Jones will start in Week 1 but each has reasons for not starting either. Brown is entering just his second year and has played only five games. Jones hasn’t ever been a long-term full-time starter.

The slot is going to be held down by Justin Coleman so Bryant’s main focus on being a starter should be in competition with Brown or Jones. And there is no reason Bryant shouldn’t start.

Bryant is bigger than Jones or Brown and is 6’1″ and 200 pounds. His arms aren’t as long as Jones so there could be some issues tackling in the open field against speedy NFL receivers. But tackling is mostly technique and this can be taught better in the NFL than it can be in college. And with new Seahawks DBs coach Karl Scott involved, Bryant will be taught excellent technique.

Bryant also will play through pain as he showed in college. He broke his hand during the 2018 season and still started 12 of 13 games. Bryant can also create turnovers as he had 10 interceptions in five seasons in college.

Bryant plays with a chip on his shoulder, too, just the way Pete Carroll likes it. He won’t back down from any receivers. While his speed isn’t elite, he should be able to learn technique quickly that allows him to overcome his limitations.
