Seahawks receiver DK Metcalf

I don’t want Metcalf to be traded. Plus, the Seahawks seem to have no plans to move him after not doing so before or during the 2022 NFL draft. Seattle still has to be asking themselves if paying Metcalf and Tyler Lockett quite a bit more than $20 million a season starting in 2023 is worth the risk, however.

Lockett is already due $23.95 million in both 2024 and 2025 when he will be 32 and 33 years old, respectively. That is a lot of money to pay an aging receiver who relies on speed instead of strength. It is likely that Lockett or Metcalf are no longer with the team in 2024 and that is more likely to be Lockett.

That said, Metcalf would bring back more in a trade than Lockett. The decision to trade Metcalf could come down to how the Seahawks feel extension negotiations are going. Metcalf’s agent is the same one as for Davante Adams and Tyreke Hill so any kind of hometown discount is off the table.

But who to trade Metcalf to and what to get in return? The Steelers are a logical choice. If they had a top-tier receiver, it could put Pittsburgh, with its very good defense, in a solid position to win their division. Seattle should ask for Pittsburgh’s first-round pick in 2023, right tackle Joe Haeg (this would allow Abe Lucas to learn for a bit before playing as Haeg is entering the last year of his contract), plus multiple later-round choices.
