Seahawks news for Sunday: Seahawks dealing with DB injury concerns
By Lee Vowell
In your Seahawks news for Sunday, June 11th, Seattle’s already iffy cornerback unit is dealing with something more pressing: Injuries. Plus, Cooper Kupp?
Here’s a question. Can we stop giving any Seahawk the number of 22? This was extremely oft-injured C.J. Prosise’s number. He was seemingly cursed. Now cornerback Tre Brown wears the number and he suffered a season-ending injury in his rookie year last season.
Or maybe Prosise didn’t really want to play while Brown seemingly has a chip on his shoulder and does. Possibly, Brown can reverse the curse.
Seahawks news Sunday: Cornerback looking really thin right now
Tre Brown: How long is he out?
But Seattle also seemingly drafted Tre Brown knowing he had a lingering leg issue. Many didn’t know about that until after Brown couldn’t play to start 2021, then did play and looked potentially really good but then suffered his season-ending injury.
At least, Seattle seemed to tell 12s that after Brown suffered his patellar tendon injury in Week 11 of 2021 that required surgery that his injury was something that more or less needed a clean-up from an injury he suffered in college. But then we all saw Brown crumble to the ground while trying to cover A.J. Green in Week 11 and his injury looked a lot worse.
The problem for 2022 is that Brown seems to have a real chance of starting at one corner spot and Sidney Jones at the other. This unit is already thin. So if Brown’s injury from 2021 isn’t merely a clean-up but a real knee problem, that could last well into 2022.
Cooper Kupp is extended and DK Metcalf has not been
Where are the Rams finding all the money they have? I will tell you. They are extremely smart with how they spend at the quarterback position. They traded for veteran Matthew Stafford last offseason but he wasn’t ever really overpaid by his former team the Lions. Stafford’s cap number in 2022, after the Rams worked out an extension with him in March, is only $13.5 million. That is ridiculously low for a veteran quarterback who has been mostly very good in his career.
So Stafford’s deal lets Los Angeles extend deals with Aaron Donald and Cooper Kupp. Kupp worked out a deal this week that will keep him in Los Angeles through 2026. His extension is for 3-years and $80 million. He will be 32 years old when the contract ends.
Seahawks receiver DK Metcalf hasn’t worked out an extension. One of the biggest differences between what the Rams are doing versus what the Seahawks are trying to do is Los Angeles is trying to extend its run of Super Bowl-caliber teams and Seattle is still trying to get back to that level.
To do that, the Seahawks need to keep the talent it has and acquire more talent. DK Metcalf needs to be extended before the season and leave behind any potential drama. If the Seahawks want to get back to the Super Bowl, DK Metcalf needs to be a part of the team.
