Making the case why Jimmy G should be Seahawks QB of the future

Seahawks adding Jimmy G: Why or why not?

So if and when Garoppolo is free from the clutches of San Francisco, I expect the Seattle Seahawks to be in contention for the quarterback. If Seattle wins those sweepstakes, what kind of player would Seattle be getting? Are they going to get the healthy and successful Jimmy in the odd 17, 19, 21 years, or the injured and inconsistent play of his even years? Does Seattle get a quarterback that can get Seattle back into the championship hunt, or the QB that will always let you down when you need him most?

When cut, I believe Garoppolo will be a Seahawk. So in this universe, how would it go if Jimmy G was a Hawk?

Best Case Scenario

San Francisco has no choice but to cut Garoppolo. Seattle signs Jimmy immediately to a simple one-year deal. His shoulder is healthy, and by the second preseason game, it’s clear he’s the starter.

With the offense in the hands of a quarterback who’s a great fit in the McVay system, the Seahawks have an epic turnaround season. Feeding off revenge and a last-place schedule, Seattle takes the NFC West, going 13-4. Jimmy’s connection with Metcalf and Lockett is strong, but it was the connection with Noah Fant that has people wondering if he’s George Kittle 2.0.

With a less explosive, but more consistent pass game, Seattle used a powerful run game and improved(and rested) defense to help lock up the division title, and the #1 seed in the NFC playoffs.

Seattle dominates Philadelphia in the Divisional round before the regular season rematch with Tampa Bay in the NFC Championship. The master and the apprentice finally meet for a chance at the Superbowl. While this is Brady’s last hurrah, Jimmy G and the Seahawks look like the next dominant threat to own the NFC, especially after Jimmy signs a long-term contract extension.

Worst Case Scenario

Seattle gets into a bidding war with Carolina and trades for a quarterback that just can’t stay healthy. Jimmy is cleared to play by week one, but he looks like a shell of himself. Even if healthy, his struggles of leading a pass-heavy offense or make the necessary deep throws hinder the team offensively while making Lockett and Metcalf wonder if Seattle is where they want to be.

Garoppolo ends up playing 12 games before missing the rest of the season from nagging injuries. Seattle finishes 5-12, and instead of drafting one of the premier pass rushers in next year’s draft, they reach for the 4th rated QB prospect at pick # 9. Garoppolo eventually becomes an all-time broadcaster for Fox, so maybe it isn’t a worst-case scenario for him.

Verdict

Like Louis Riddick of ESPN stated a few days ago, if Seattle signs Garoppolo, they’ll be in a position to be good quickly. A healthy Garoppolo paired with Seattle’s current weapons is a playoff team.

They may not be a championship team, but they’d be capable of winning a round or two, similar to the 2015-2019 Seattle Seahawks teams. The difference this time is the immense draft capital awaiting them in next year’s draft. Nail next year’s draft, and the 2023 Seattle Seahawks can be Super Bowl contenders with Jimmy G.

Sign Garoppolo to a shorter year extension and draft a QB if you love one in 2023. Let Jimmy groom him and be the starter until he loses the job, which will be a while if he can just stay healthy.
