Pro Football Focus did a re-draft of the first round of the 2020 NFL draft on Wednesday and they completely blew the Seattle Seahawks pick.

I should be fair for a second as part of PFF’s reasoning for Seattle not taking linebacker Jordyn Brooks with the 27th-overall choice in the 2020 draft has nothing to do with Brooks and is all about the position that the Seahawks would have taken had they taken a different player.

According to PFF (subscription required). instead of Brooks, Seattle should have chosen safety Jeremy Chinn. Had Seattle taken Chinn, that might have meant that Seattle would not have felt the need to trade for Jamal Adams and that would have meant Seattle didn’t have to give up so many first-round picks to get Adams.

Jordyn Brooks was a great pick for the Seahawks in the 2020 NFL draft

But here’s the thing, Brooks is better than Chinn. Chinn isn’t a bad player. But Brooks has been good enough where the Seahawks were OK with letting future Hall of Famer Bobby Wagner leave and not fight too hard to bring him back once they released him this offseason. Brooks finished second in the NFL in tackles in 2021 (184) and led the league in solo tackles (109). He also had 10 tackles for loss.

Brooks is basically the new Wagner and should be kept in Seattle for the next 8-10 seasons. He’s that good. Chinn might also be good but he isn’t Brooks.

Plus, Seattle already had Marquise Blair on the roster. The Seahawks did not know that Blair would continue to get hurt and not become a consistently good player. At the time, Blair had flashed potential. The trade for Adams didn’t materialize because Blair was bad; It happened because the Seahawks saw an opportunity to add a special player and maybe put the team over the top.

It didn’t happen. And Adams got hurt twice. But Seattle wouldn’t have known this during the 2020 draft and they chose wisely by adding Brooks. He could very well become a Pro Bowler this season and for years to come. The same can’t be said of Chinn.
