In Seahawks news for your week so far, Seattle worked out an extension with defensive tackle Bryan Mone but released an offensive lineman as well.

That “so far” part might be important, though. Seattle seems to have a recent history of making major moves on Fridays so anything can happen later in the day. Possibly the Seahawks finally make a move for Baker Mayfield. Or Gardner Minshew. Or someone else.

Either way, Seattle did make some minor moves this week. One to secure a great run-stopper and another to let a project walk away.

Seahawks make two moves this week

Bryan Mone is extended

Seattle decided to use some of its available cap space by keeping Mone in Seattle through 2024. In 2021, Mone played in 14 games and started five of them. He had 1.5 sacks but his real strength is in eating up blocks so that the Seahawks linebackers can tackle a running back. Mone also had a forced fumble and (somehow) a pass defensed.

Per ESPN’s Brady Henderson, Mone’s deal will be a “two-year, $12M extension with the Seahawks, via a source: $1.5M signing bonus; base salaries of $965K, $2.285M and $4.89M; per-game bonuses worth up to $340K in ‘22 and $510K in ‘23 and ‘24; roster bonuses worth $500K in ‘23 and ‘24.”

Seattle releases Pier-Olivier Lestage

Lestage was taken in the second round of the 2021 CFL draft but decided to try the NFL instead and signed with the Seahawks as an undrafted free agent last year. He managed to make the practice squad last season but wasn’t activated for any real games.

Lestage’s release means the Seahawks now have two open spots on the 90-man roster. Seattle has to cut down to a 53-man roster before Week 1 of the NFL season so it was likely Lestage would only be on the practice squad again. He has good size but maybe not the quickness to play at a high level in the NFL.
