Seahawks 5 best options at quarterback starting in 2023
By Lee Vowell
Number 3: Current Seahawks QB Drew Lock
Those five games in 2019 for Drew Lock with the Denver Broncos have made Pete Carroll into a believer. The issue is that 2019 was three seasons ago and Lock hasn’t been very good otherwise. Still, with better offensive coaching and direction in 2022, Lock might have a much better shot at replicating the five games at the end of the 2019 season when Lock led Denver to a 4-1 record and Lock threw for 7 touchdowns and just 3 picks.
Seattle does seem to be taking a slightly odd approach with Lock this offseason, however. Lock was acquired in the trade for Russell Wilson. But Geno Smith, a veteran backup who doesn’t seem capable of being trusted as a starter full-time in the NFL, seems to have a lead in the QB competition over Lock.
Seattle seems to be doing this intentionally as Lock has reportedly struggled with confidence in his NFL career and if he is able to earn the starting job with the Seahawks, that would help his confidence. But the process seems designed for Lock to feel better about himself so I am not sure how much substance there is to it.
Lock, though, does have a strong arm and good mobility. He has the physical ability to play in the NFL. If Lock can become the starter and play well early, that could carry him into the rest of the year and he could earn a longer-term gig as the Seattle QB.
