Making the case for Lamar Jackson as the Seahawks QB of the future
Verdict: Seahawks to try for Lamar Jackson or not try?
Big-time quarterbacks like Lamar Jackson and Russell Wilson don’t come around very often and are even more rarely available. We have seen how Wilson has changed Denver’s culture and expectations, without even taking a snap. In this universe, what could it look like if Lamar Jackson is a Seahawk?
Best Case Scenario
Seattle acquired Lamar Jackson in the spring of 2023 after going 7-10. They still have a top 20 pick thanks to Denver’s underachieving, and nab a legit pass rusher. With two huge extensions for Jackson and Metcalf locked in, the vibe and culture change.
Seattle, with the best run game in the league behind Rashaad Penny, Walker, and Jackson, helps Seattle dominate the time of possession, leading to a top 12 defense for the Hawks. When Seattle isn’t pounding the rock, Lamar is using the McVay offense to light up the NFC, as both Lockett and Metcalf hit 1K yards and 10 touchdowns. Lamar Jackson, with a fresh start and loaded with weapons, runs away with his second MVP award.
Seattle goes 14-3, and rolls through a weak NFC playoff bracket, crushing the depleted back-to-back Super Bowl champion LA Rams for the NFC title. Waiting for them Vegas for the 2024 Super Bowl is the Buffalo Bills, hoping to avoid losing their second Super Bowl in as many years.
Worst Case Scenario
Seattle pays a heavy price for Lamar Jackson, and the Ravens strike gold. Ravens select a star quarterback with Seattle’s top 10 pick and use a cheap QB contract to get back to the Super Bowl in 2024.
Seattle, excited to have Jackson, quickly realizes that his running is catching up to him. He’s not quite as elusive, leading to injuries and a continuous slide in his passing efficiency. Locked into a massive extension, Seattle finds itself trapped for the next four seasons, missing the playoffs each year.
Verdict
I’m excited about the prospect of a talented rookie QB in Seattle next season, it’d be fun, and not something Seattle has had since 2012. They were lucky then, and may not be so lucky this time. Lamar Jackson may be the most electric and talented player in the league. I need to see him in Waldron’s offense, and with Metcalf to throw to.
It’s not often an opportunity comes around like this. We know Seattle was interested in Watson when he was available. I don’t think Seattle’s leadership wants to wait and develop a QB. If he is available, Seattle should and would do everything to get Jackson to the Pacific Northwest.
