There appear to be conflicting reports about the Seahawks interest in acquiring Baker Mayfield but one reputable source said Seattle isn’t that interested.

12s have read recent tweets from someone named Michael Balko who has tweeted that the Seahawks and Browns were “close” to having a deal done for Seattle trading for Mayfield. This appeared at the time to be a bit sketchy as one could ask, “How does Balko information that Adam Schefter or Ian Rapoport don’t have?”

Balko has a podcast (heck, so do we at 12th Man Rising but I wouldn’t rely on us to break news, only to comment on breaking news) and has worked on some reputable sites as a freelance writer but that is where is inside info, if he has any, ends.

Baker Mayfield to Seahawks doesn’t seem likely to happen any time soon

So more importantly, a person with true inside intel, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, appeared on the Pat McAfee radio show on Tuesday and, at least for now, seems to have put to rest any Mayfield to Seattle talk.

Rapoport said he isn’t sure where Mayfield will eventually end up but that the Seahawks “have never really been that interested in him.”

This makes more sense currently than a deal being imminent for Mayfield. I don’t know much of anything but I did post a prediction that Seattle would add Mayfield but not until late August. I should be clear here that I have no idea what will happen with Mayfield either but the Browns would probably be more likely to work a trade closer to the season when their leverage in any trade scenario is greatly diminishing.

Teams will already be working out their quarterback situations by then. Maybe Drew Lock and Geno Smith are looking pretty good through preseason games as well and there is no need to upgrade the quarterback position in Seattle. But if Lock and Smith look bad then adding Mayfield makes sense.

All that said, I trust Rapoport a lot more than Balko (and definitely more than myself) when it comes to knowing if the Seahawks are truly interested in adding Mayfield. Bade on what Rapoport said Tuesday, Mayfield to Seattle isn’t likely to happen.
