Former Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren inches closer to Hall of Fame
By Lee Vowell
Pro Football Hall of Fame semifinalists in the Seniors, Coach/Contributor categories were announced this week and a former Seahawks coach is on the list.
Mike Holmgren coached the Seahawks from 1999 through 2008, leading Seattle to the franchise’s first Super Bowl. This occurred in the 2005 season and while Seattle officially lost the game, there were some obvious referee errors that might have cost Seattle and Holmgren.
Had Holmgren’s team won the game he would have been the first coach to win a Super Bowl with two different teams. Holmgren won his first Super Bowl with the Packers in 1996. He was the coach of Green Bay from 1992 through 1998.
Former Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren could make the Pro Football Hall of Fame this year
With the Seahawks, Holmgren went 86-74 and the team went to the playoffs six times and won five division titles. He is the second-winningest coach (behind Pete Carroll) in terms of wins in Seattle history. Holmgren led the Packers and Seahawks to a combined 161 wins which is 16th-best all-time.
He is one of 29 semifinalists, which seems like a lot. The Finalist stage will see the list trimmed to 12. Results of the voting for the final round will be announced July 27th. The problem with the Pro Football Hall of Fame until recently is that it was so player-centric that coaches had to wait their turn in hopes of getting voted in.
Still, it isn’t easy for anyone listed in the Seniors, Coach/Contributor categories because only two will be nominated to the full ballot for election. Those elected into the Hall of Fame are announced on the Saturday before the Super Bowl each year.
Hopefully, this will be the year that Holmgren is elected as he has deserved induction long before now. Pete Carroll should also be inducted one day as well.
There are no other semifinalists that are strongly tied to the Seahawks organization. Though the Hall may find several 2010s Seattle players, such as Marshawn Lynch and Richard Sherman, up for election soon.
