Baker Mayfield won’t be coming to the Seahawks. He was traded to the Panthers. But Seattle still has outside options for their 2022 QB.

Of course, Seattle could just decide to go with Geno Smith and Drew Lock. There is no guarantee adding a quarterback currently outside the organization means the team would be better in 2022.

Still, the Seahawks are never afraid to take a chance on a player they think improves the team. If Seattle doesn’t like what it sees from Smith or Lock in training camp, trading for a different quarterback would clearly be on the table.

Three 2022 options at QB for the Seahawks outside the organization

Current 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo

Garoppolo plays for NFC West rival the 49ers, of course. But a trade between Seattle and San Francisco wouldn’t be out of the question. San Francisco knows what Jimmy G is capable of and would know how to play against him. But the Seahawks want a point guard-type quarterback and that is what Garoppolo does best.

Garoppolo is a slightly odd player. He has skills but is often injured. He isn’t an issue in the locker room but he also doesn’t seem like a natural leader. Basically, adding Garoppolo doesn’t make him a leader on the Seattle team but it does give the team someone with postseason experience who is fairly efficient in his play

Garoppolo’s QBR is 98.7 which is actually very good. He has struggled against the Seahawks in his career but against most other teams has done well. For instance, in his last three games against the Rams, Garoppolo has thrown for 6 touchdowns against 2 interceptions and has two games with a QBR of 124.3 and higher.

Against the Cardinals, Garoppolo has been even more consistently better over his career. He has thrown 13 touchdowns against 3 picks in five games. He has never had a QBR below 100.6 in any game against Arizona.

That kind of success against intradivision teams should at least make Seattle think a couple of seconds about adding Garoppolo for 2022. He is a free agent after this coming year.
