Seahawks should add cornerback Byron Murphy

Murphy has had a bit of an odd career. He started at left corner as a rookie in 2019 and started 16 games then switched to right corner in 2020 but only started 7 games and then in 2021 he started 16 games as a corner wherever the Arizona Cardinals needed him. He was very good last year and had 4 interceptions and one was returned for an interception.

The problem is that 3 of Murphy’s interceptions came in the first four weeks of last season. His next pick didn’t come until Week 13. Plus, 8 of his passes defended came in the first half of last year. He had 12 passes defended in total. Quarterbacks didn’t seem to be throwing less towards Murphy, however, he just wasn’t as effective.

That said. Murphy still put up a QBR-allowed of 87.6 in 2021 and hasn’t allowed a yards-per-target of more than 7.5 in his career. This isn’t too far off from the best Richard Sherman has done in his last four years, for instance. No, Sherman isn’t the player he once was but he was still mostly good.

Murphy would likely also feel comfortable in Seattle since he played at the University of Washington. Current Seahawk Sidney Jones also played at U-Dub and has a resurgent year in 2021. Maybe Murphy coming back to the city where he played in college would elevate his game even more.
