Making the case for Tyler Huntley as the Seahawks QB of the future
Making the case whether the Seahawks should add Huntley or not
So after a pretty impressive showing in the final games of 2021, Huntley has become a hot name for teams looking for their next franchise QB. In this universe, Seattle is able to win the bidding war for his services. So how could it play out?
Best case scenario
Huntley is traded to Seattle this summer, and instantly wins the competition at QB. Russell Wilson looks almost in shock on the sidelines in Seattle, as it looks like his former team acquired his younger self. Seattle destroys Denver 34-13 in the Week 1 opener. Huntley showed all the tools, but especially his mobility, as Seattle ran for over 200 yards.
Huntley has an up and down season but shows the promise of a potential franchise QB. The Hawks have a similar season to last year’s Philadelphia Eagles. Seattle goes 10-7, and clinches the final wildcard spot, before bowing out.
With Huntley happy in Seattle, they agreed to a three-year deal for $60 million, $40 mil guaranteed. As the QB situation is resolved, Seattle takes its cap space and a treasure chest of picks to steal Bradley Chubb from Denver, Byron Murphy from Arizona, and then draft two receivers and a pass rusher in their three top 50 picks in the NFL Draft. As they head into 2023 with a dominant run game and defense, the Seahawks give off the vibes of a Super Bowl contender.
Worst case scenario
The Seahawks overpay for Tyler Huntley, giving up a day two pick, and sign him to an extension too soon. After the season, Seattle is 6-11 and is stuck with a QB that is too good to tank, but too bad to be good. Huntley just can’t make the throws necessary to appease Metcalf, and he informs Seattle he wants out. Seattle finds themselves in a worse spot in 2023 than in 2022.
Verdict
One of Huntley or Jackson will no longer be Ravens at some point very soon. Huntley may not be my top option, and I would be surprised to see him ever being a top ten quarterback in the league, which is needed to reach the ultimate goal.
I do think he has a lot of talent and leadership skills, and it would be an absolute blast to watch a young mobile QB in Seattle again. I just think Seattle can find someone else that can fit that profile in 2023. Short term, I’ll take him for a fourth-round pick and the cap relief. Anything more than that and I’m out.
