Making the case for Taylor Heinicke as the Seahawks QB of the future
How the Seahawks could get Heinicke
As the Washington Football Team became the Commanders this spring, there was more change in the horizon than just the team name. In March the Indianapolis Colts gave up on Wentz, who had a total meltdown in a must-win Week 17 game against Jacksonville that cost Indy the playoffs. Back in the NFC East, the Commanders feel that Wentz gives them a better chance than Heinicke.
In the draft, after sliding all the way to the fifth round, Washington took former UNC star Sam Howell. Howell had a really rough final season at UNC but has some traits that could lead to him being a player at the next level.
With both Wentz and Howell in the picture, Heinicke appears to be the odd man out, and Seattle could be the team to jump on the opportunity. A deal for Heinicke shouldn’t be too complicated. I’d expect he could be acquired for a fifth-round draft pick, or even a conditional sixth-round pick.
If Seattle went the trade route with Heinicke in 2022, then you do run into the problem of too many QBs in Seattle. In this scenario, considering you acquired Drew Lock in the Russell Wilson trade, I’d look for Seattle to move Geno Smith, possibly to Cleveland, or simply just cut him. Let Lock and Heinicke battle for the job.
If Seattle decides to go the free agency route in 2023, Heinicke could be a great “Matt Flynn” type of target that could be a viable starter in 2023 for a hopefully more well-rounded roster in Seattle.
