Making the case whether the Seahawks should add Heinicke or not

We’ve seen what Heinicke can do under the biggest moments and against the greatest of the game, we’ve also seen what he looks like on a team that is frankly not very good. So, if he did end up in Seattle this season, how would things play out?

Best case scenario

Heinicke comes in after Seattle gives up a conditional 6th-round pick to D.C., and immediately wins the job. Seattle is able to recoup the lost pick by gaining a late-round pick from Cleveland for Geno Smith.

The Seahawks battle to a 9-8 season that has them in the playoff chase all season. Though they miss out, Heinicke plays well enough and has developed enough chemistry with DK Metcalf to warrant staying in Seattle. The Seahawks extend Heinicke for 2 years, $24 million, mostly in incentives. With Heinicke locked in as a solid above average bridge QB, Seattle can let the draft come to them, taking the best available players rather than reaching for a QB too early.

Whether Heinicke is the man or not, Seattle is in a better place overall heading into 2023.

Worst case scenario- Heinicke is acquired for too much, and Seattle goes 7-10 while he looks ok, but not a future QB for the Seahawks. While this might not seem so doom and gloom, it cost Seattle a top 5-7 pick and a top-tier QB in a loaded draft class. Seattle is caught in between quarterbacks for yet another season.

Verdict

I know that most people will find Taylor Heinicke to be the most boring option I’ve written about, and you’re not wrong. The difference between my best case and worst case scenarios is very thin, essentially a game or two difference. That’s because I think you pretty much know what you’re gonna get with Heinicke. Scrappy, surprisingly talented, but not top tier in Washington.

I think Seattle can get more out of him, and even if they don’t, Heinicke can be one of the league’s best backups to a hopeful QB that Seattle was able to draft still. I like him more than Geno and Lock, give him a shot.
