Seahawks trade DK Metcalf to the Detroit Lions for both first-round picks in 2023

OK, first let me say. I am not a fan of trading DK Metcalf, but hear me out. The Seahawks are going to have to spend a ton – an unknown amount, mind you – of money on extending him and that will eat up cap space for years. Is he good? Of course. Again, I don’t want him to leave Seattle but this article is all about the future. If Seattle can add high-end talent along with saving money? Why not do it.

I realize that Detroit is also trying to build for the future and save money and draft capital while doing so, but adding Metcalf (a real replacement for Charles “Megatron” Johnson if there ever was one), might be something they cannot pass up. Detroit is well-coached at this point but just devoid of talent. Trading Metcalf right now for Detroit’s first-round choices next year makes sense in so many ways.

Maybe Detroit won’t go for that but they should. Metcalf is talented enough to be great for 10 more years. But if the Seahawks did pull off this trade, that would give them four picks in the first round of 2023. With that, Seattle could choose another receiver and that pick would likely be a high one from Detroit. But with the other first-round choices, Seattle could choose its future quarterback and an edge rusher and a cornerback.

If Seattle chooses a quarterback in 2023, it will be with a high pick no matter if that choice is their own, Denver’s or Detroit’s. Rookie QBs can be pretty good but Seattle would also have the talent around that QB to be very good overall.

Again, this is a dream-case scenario that is best for the Seahawks and not specific players. If Seattle can add young talent, they would not only be potentially very good in 2023 but for years beyond next season.
