Three changes Seahawks could make in 2022 training camp
By Lee Vowell
The Seattle Seahawks still have cap space and draft capital to make a move or two to improve the 2022 team. Here are three of the options they have.
The Seahawks currently have the 7th-most cap space in the NFL, per Over The Cap, at $16,354,510. This can be adjusted a bit as well if Seattle has a chance to grab a true impact player. But if that chance comes along, Seattle could think long-term about that player as well as Seattle will have lots of cap space in 2023.
Even if the team doesn’t create cap room, there are several players who might be available that Seattle could afford to add and make the prospects of a 2022 season being successful even better. But I will start with a change that could come in training camp that is basically low-hanging fruit.
Seattle Seahawks could make these three changes in training camp
Seahawks change number 1: Releasing Chris Carson
I am surprised that Seattle hasn’t yet released Carson. He has a serious neck injury and while he might want to play again, it might be wrong for the team to let him. A new injury to his neck could affect his ability to live a normal life well into old age.
The other aspect of this is that Carson is due to make $6,100,000 in 2022 and by releasing him the Seahawks could save $3,100,000. If he were the presumed starter it might be one thing. But as Seattle has Rashaad Penny and 2022 draftee Ken Walker, Carson is probably RB3 in the rotation. That is too much to pay for a third-string running back.
The money saved with Carson’s release could be spent to add another player in a greater position of need.
