When one thinks Seahawks QB Geno Smith might be easily replaceable, one should look no further than the heap that is available free agent quarterbacks.

12s either are OK with Geno Smith being QB1 for the Seahawks in 2022 or they aren’t. I don’t think anyone loves the idea of Smith being Seattle’s quarterback but there are probably not a ton of people who truly hate it.

To be honest, Smith is so even-keel as a quarterback that he neither inspires extreme positivity nor great negativity. He is what he is which is, well…fine.

But now that Jimmy Garoppolo is officially staying in San Francisco for another year, the Seahawks don’t have a lot of options to take Smith’s place as the starter at quarterback. And no, it isn’t going to be Drew Lock.

Geno Smith is the Seahawks true QB1 to start 2022

But let me ask you, 12s. Would you rather have Cam Newton (please answer “no”) or Ryan Fitzpatrick or Brett Hundley? If you answered “yes” to any of these guys then maybe you haven’t been watching football closely over the last few seasons.

Fitzpatrick has always been up and down; Sometimes great and sometimes horrific. He’s a lot like Drew Lock. Newton is old and can’t throw accurately. Hundley is a watered-down Geno Smith.

Geno Smith went 1-2 as a starter for the Seahawks in 2021 after Russell Wilson suffered a finger injury against the Rams. Smith replaced Wilson just before the fourth quarter against Los Angeles and led Seattle to more points in that game than Wilson did.

I am by no means saying Smith or better than Wilson; He isn’t. But he might be able to run the Seahawks offense just as well. What really beat Seattle and Smith in games against the Steelers and Saints in 2021 was that Seattle seemed to lack a true faith that Smith could be unleashed a bit and not afraid of him to make mistakes.

Then he did make mistakes in a couple of games late and the team lost. But that was only because the Seahawks margin of error was so thin that if any quarterback had made a mistake Seattle would have lost. 2022 is different.

Next. Seahawks final roster projection before final cuts are made. dark

Seattle has apparently put its trust in Geno Smith to be QB1 in 2022. This should mean he is free to make a mistake or two, as all quarterbacks do. Smith should play with more confidence because of that. And 12s should be confident that there simply is no better QB on the open market than Smith.
