Seattle Seahawks news for Saturday: It is all about Week 1
By Lee Vowell
Week 1 of the 2022 NFL season is upon us and here is some of the Seattle Seahawks news you may have missed in the days leading up to beating Russell Wilson.
Or being a Seahawks fan and extremely rabid in your love of all things Seattle football, maybe you haven’t missed a detail of news leading up to Week 1. But just in case, below is some interesting items.
Of course, the most obvious storyline is that former quarterback Russell Wilson returns to play Seattle to start the 2022 season. How should 12s respond? More on that in a minute.
And it could be that Seattle’s current starting quarterback isn’t as bad as many think he is. Heck, Geno Smith could even lead the Seahawks to a Week 1 victory.
Seahawks news leading up to Week 1 versus Russell Wilson and the Broncos
Russell Wilson “confirms” Seahawks tactics
The rumors that the Seahawks tried to trade Russell Wilson in the years before actually trading him this past offseason appear to be accurate, per Wilson himself. But really, this should come as no surprise. General manager John Schneider and head coach Pete Carroll have always said they were willing to listen to any potential offers for anyone.
Heck, Schneider and Carroll might trade the other if the offer was good enough for Schneider or Carroll.
There has also been discussion that Seattle thought Wilson’s skill had “diminished.” While Wilson might still be a great quarterback and throws the best deep ball possibly ever, there is no doubt that his ability to use his legs as well as he did early in his career does seem…well, diminished.
Wilson’s arm talent aside, that he could run so well made him more dangerous. So while maybe he still can pick up yards with his legs at times, he has chosen to do so less often in recent years and this has made it easier for defenses to defend him in important games.
Geno Smith may be better than people think
I know Geno Smith isn’t the most exciting of quarterbacks but clearly, the Seahawks just want him to be in control of the offense and not turn the ball over. He isn’t Russell Wilson and no one should expect him to be. But is he better than many think?
For one, Steven Ruiz of The Ringer says Smith is the 22nd-best starting quarterback. That’s not great but at least he is better, per the ranking, than Mitch Trubisky of the Steelers and Trey Lance of the 49ers. Russell Wilson ranks 6th, by the way.
Russell Wilson Week 1: To boo or not to boo?
At the start of the game, the most interesting thing to watch will be how 12s react to Wilson running onto the field in a Broncos uniform. Have you already made your decision on what you will do? Probably.
Once the game begins, things will probably settle in and Wilson will just be the quarterback of the team the Seahawks are playing but at the beginning? You have to boo, right? Not only because it’s Wilson and he has had a lot of negative things to say about the Seahawks this offseason but mainly because he doesn’t play for Seattle. He should be treated like every other player who is playing against Seattle.
