Notes from the Nest Week 3: Seahawks lost (or won?) the draft pick bowl
Seahawks’ Pete Carroll has issues managing the clock
Pete Carroll clock management
The offense was pretty dang good on Sunday. On only eight drives, the Seahawks scored five times. They moved the ball well but were stalled a couple of times in the red zone.
No moment was bigger than late in the 3rd quarter when the Seahawks and Falcons were tied at 20. The Seahawks were facing a 4th and 1 and appeared to be ready to go for it. As the team stood ready for a play call, the clock kept ticking and ticking. Before you knew it the clock was down to the final seconds and Pete called a timeout. After the timeout, the Seahawks chose to kick the ball.
Geno looked peeved, this is the second time this year the team has taken the ball out of his hands, or out of a normal offense’s hand (stupid trick play).
It was a weak decision by Pete on so many levels.
That could have been a great learning experience for the offensive line, especially Charles Cross and Abe Lucas. Pete took that away.
The Seahawks were going to need more than 3 points in the final 18 minutes to win, and for Pete to think that would be enough is terrible decision-making.
When going for it on 4th down, you have to be decisive. If you don’t feel it, that’s fine kick it. If you get to the point where you are calling a timeout, then you have already wasted a valuable asset. You have to use the time you bought and get the most value out of it.
There’s no way around it, Pete has once again failed this team in his management of the clock and trust in the team.
