Ranking the top 4 free agents the Seahawks should sign next offseason
By Lee Vowell
Sure, there is most of a 2022 season still to play but the Seahawks might need to look forward to 2023 when they have money to spend to improve the team.
The Seahawks currently have $50,236,499 to spend in 2023. This is fourth-most in the NFL, per Spotrac.com. With a ton of draft capital next year as well, Seattle could get a lot better sooner than later.
That is if they choose to spend money next offseason and if they are wise in spending what they do. Seattle doesn’t need to sign a quarterback, for instance; They need to draft one.
This means Seattle could spend money on positions of need. And if they do choose to spend in this way, there are many players who should be worthy of bringing in next offseason.
4 free agents the Seahawks should sign in 2023
Defensive tackle Poona Ford
I will start with an impending Seahawks free agent. Ford may not yet have produced much when it comes to chasing down opposing quarterbacks. Maybe his assumed ability to do that is a bit overrated. But one thing is for sure with Ford: He is a fantastic run defender and should be for several more seasons. Ford will turn just 27 years old in the 2022 season in a position that can be productive well beyond 30 years old. Just ask his teammate, Al Woods.
Ford signed an extension before the 2021 season but the issue was that the Seahawks didn’t sign him for long enough. Seattle should have extended him for four more years. Ford does have a massive cap hit in 2022 at $10,075,000 and he needs to show his next deal should be close to the same amount.
But Ford hasn’t been good so far in 2022. He seems to have had issues adjusting to more of a 3-4 base the Seahawks are running. Ford still has the strength to bully opposing linemen and there is a lot of football left to play this season. If Ford could get to 4 sacks and play better overall consistently, he should be a must-re-sign for Seattle.
