The Seahawks fell to 2-3 with a high-scoring loss to the Saints in New Orleans. And while Seattle offensively played well enough to win overall, the defense continues to be so bad that this team will continue to lose by giving up too many points.

But some of the blame belongs on DK Metcalf too. He dropped a touchdown pass in the first half and the drive resulted in a field goal. He fumbled to start the second half and the Saints turned it into a touchdown. Metcalf was a 7-point swing on his own. Seattle lost 39-32.

Seattle also may have lost Rashaad Penny for an extended period of time. He left with an ankle injury that probably will keep him out for weeks.

But I don’t want to make this all about Seattle’s issues. This is a rebuilding year so maybe we should celebrate the small positives in what is appearing more like an up-and-down year.

The rookies are mostly good and will turn this team into one that can win at a high level sooner than later. Tariq Woolen looks like a Pro Bowler already. He got his third interception in as many weeks against New Orleans.

Running back Ken Walker had a 69-yard run for a touchdown in the 4th quarter and finished with 88 yards on 8 carries.

Coby Bryant may have had his best game in the NFL. He forced a fumble and played some right coverage.

Al Woods was brilliant in the middle of the defensive line (he needs a lot more help from his teammates, though). Woods blew up several plays and finished with 3 tackles and a sack.

And Geno Smith looked fantastic once again. He had only one pass that could truly be called questionable and finished 16 of 25 for 268 yards and 3 touchdowns. None of the issues with the Seahawks this year so far have anything to do with Geno. He’s played so well that he’s worthy of being on a 5-0 team.

Still, Seattle lost. The defense gave up 235 rushing yards. Seattle made an atrocious fake punt call in the first half that resulted in the Saints having the ball deep in Seahawks territory and New Orleans scored a touchdown on the resulting drive. And Seattle had 12 penalties for 85 yards.

This current Seahawks team isn’t good enough to make the playoffs. Period. But 12s should also remember this team wasn’t supposed to be good but that also this team has a lot of players that are going to help the team win a lot of games in the future.
