For Pete’s sake: 3 Seahawks that were awful in Week 5 loss
By Lee Vowell
Seahawks defensive tackle Bryan Mone
I am sad. Mone was a good player at stopping the run in 2021. This preseason, he showed agility that might have allowed him to pressure quarterbacks in 2022. Well, he has been terrible this year and in Week 5, he was at his worst. Maybe it is the scheme with Mone and he isn’t a good fit. Or maybe Mone simply isn’t as good as he has shown in flashes or in meaningless games like the preseason.
Against the Saints in Week 5, Mone got his greatest number of snaps in 2022 with 37. He lined up at nose guard 28 times. The issue during the game for the Seahawks many times is that they got gouged up the middle exactly where Mone was. Veteran Al Woods was next to Mone many times and yet Woods was nearly immovable. This means a lot of the blame for what the Saints did Sunday can be blamed on Mone.
Mone had just 2 tackles. Woods had 20 snaps and was in on 5 tackles. Woods also had a tackle for loss and a sack. Mone did not make any splash plays and that’s a problem. Woods is 35 years old and probably won’t play at a high level for a lot longer. Mone is just about 27 years old and should be on the upswing of his career.
But so far in 2022, after a promising preseason and 2021, Woods has just 13 tackles in 5 games and zero tackles for loss or quarterback hits. He should be a mountain of a man who eats up blockers and helps slow the opposing team’s running game, but he failed at this mightily in Week 5 and that helped lead the Seahawks to a loss.
