Top 5 2023 free agents Seahawks should sign for future success
By Lee Vowell
The Seahawks have great draft capital in 2023 but Seattle also has quite a bit of cash to spend. Seattle currently has the sixth-most cap space ($46,309,764) in the NFL for next year. As good as this year’s rookie class is and with more high draft picks slated for 2023 plus money to spend on free agents, Seattle should be positioned for a playoff run for the next few seasons.
But while general manager John Schneider doesn’t have a history of spending aggressively in free agency, next year, for the correct player at least, might help push the team into a Super Bowl contender. Seattle has exceeded expectations this season. Why can’t 2023 be more of the same?
We are only halfway through 2022 and this team might still end up in the playoffs. But it’s never too early to look ahead to what next year might bring. And if the Seahawks hit another home run in the 2023 NFL draft and also sign a couple of great free agents, the Seattle team of 2023 might not just be good, but great.

Number 5: Seahawks should re-sign defensive tackle Poona Ford
I will start with one of Seattle’s own. Ford has not yet been the kind of pass rusher Seattle might have hoped for but Ford has always been a great run-stopper who had the potential to chase down quarterbacks. At the start of 2022, Ford was playing some of the worst football of his career. But over the last several weeks, Ford has played some of his best.
This might partly be because Ford is playing a bit fresher as he has played slightly fewer snaps per game as Seattle has changed a bit more back to a 4-3 than 3-4 and the team has rotated interior defensive linemen out a bit more. Ford already has as many sacks in 2022 as he has in any other year in his career.
Ford will also just be 27 years old when next year starts so he should have several seasons left to play at a good level. Ford has already signed one extension with Seattle. Signing him to a second extension seems like a no-brainer.
