Seahawks general manager John Schneider

John Schneider isn’t going anywhere unless he wants to leave the organization. He has overall been far too successful to get rid of. So why do I have him on the hot seat? Easy. The Seahawks seemed to take a slumber during drafts for a few years, especially in 2021, and thankfully only had a great draft in 2022 because they desperately had to. And while Schneider was pretty good at making trades to bring impactful players into Seattle, last offseason he did the reverse and traded Russell Wilson away from the Seahawks.

Schneider and Pete Carroll also seemed to do the wrong thing in how they released Bobby Wagner last offseason too. The way Wagner was advised of his leaving was very un-Seahawks like and it will be a blemish on Schneider’s career. But the career has otherwise been a good one.

But this offseason is a completely different one than Schneider has had as the general manager in Seattle. Never before has he had the combination of high-end draft capital with a relative abundance of cap room. Seattle can do more than most other NFL teams to improve the franchise this offseason, but good decisions have to be made.

Like in the 2022 draft, Schneider doesn’t need to overthink it. Just maybe take the best player available at the greatest position of need. Sign a relatively expensive free agent at a position of need. Don’t make too many decisions that seem to come from out of nowhere; Just play it smart. If Schneider does, Seattle should be good for years. If Schneider whiffs on lots of moves this offseason, Seattle will be no better in five years than they are right now.
