At one point, the game seemed done. Quarterback Sam Darnold seemed back to his normal way of doing business in meaningful games by making critical mistakes while not elevating his team at other points of the game. Instead, the Seattle Seahawks stunningly came back from 30-14 in the fourth quarter to win 38-37 in overtime.
This was greatly helped by Seattle being successful on three straight 2-point conversions after their three second half and overtime touchdowns. The first was fairly straightforward. So was the final one that won the game, though quite stressful because of the situation.
But the second one that tied the score at 30-all was maybe the most unusual 2-point conversion in the history of the sport. The Seahawks appeared to have failed on a pass from Darnold to running back Zach Charbonnet. The pass also hit a Los Angeles Rams' helmet, and this appeared to have caused an incompletion.
A 2-point conversion in Week 16 will go down in Seattle Seahawks lore
What actually happened was Darnold threw the ball slightly backwards, which meant instead of a lateral, his throw was a fumble. At first, the officials ruled the play dead as an incomplete pass, but after review and after Charbonnet had slowly walked over and picked the ball up in the end zone, the play was overturned and ruled correctly.
Amazon broadcast announcers Al Michaels and Kirk Herbstreit were initially as confused as viewers and, likely, many of the players. Instead, they summed up the situation perfectly:
“Is this the craziest 2-point conversion ever?” - Herbstreit
“Ever.” - Al Michaels
After the game, Rams head coach Sean McVay asked for more clarification. He had never seen such a play, especially one that had been changed from an incomplete pass to a successful try. Ultimately, the referees got the call correct. The pass went backwards and was a fumble. A Los Angeles player could have picked the ball up as much as Charbonnet did. They didn't.

To be fair, Charbonnet didn't act as if he knew he had scored either. The fact that he did changed the narrative of the game, and maybe the season. If any of the 2-point conversions had failed, LA would have won.
With the victory, the Seattle Seahawks are now 12-3, and lead the NFC West by a full game with two games remaining. Neither will be easy as the team travels to play the Carolina Panthers and then to Santa Clara to play the San Francisco 49ers. If Seattle wins both, the Seahawks will be the top seed in the NFC.
