Immediately following the 2025 NFL draft, the Seattle Seahawks went to work signing undrafted players. As 12s know, Seattle has had some fantastic undrafted free agents (UDFA) since John Schneider became the team's general manager in 2010. Where would the team have been without players such as Doug Baldwin, for instance?
Still, any given UDFA has a difficult time making an NFL roster. Draftees are going to be given the best chance simply because of the money already spent on them. Seattle does not want to waste a couple of million dollars if a UDFA is going to earn a roster spot. At least, theoretically.
But UDFAs do break through. The Seahawks' WR4 is Jake Bobo, who was an undrafted free agent (UDFA) in 2023. He has not put up huge numbers yet, but he could be a better fit in the new offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak's system. Kubiak could find a way to use Bobo as a red-zone threat, for instance.
Zy Alexander could be a player to watch for the Seahawks this summer
There could be a 2025 UDFA that earns a spot on the 53-man roster as well. The Seahawks did not select a cornerback in the draft, despite a lack of proven depth in the group. Josh Jobe would be Seattle's second outside corner in Week 1, and Jobe was a UDFA in 2022 (he initially signed with the Philadelphia Eagles.
The lack of proven quality depth could leave the door open for 2025 UDFA Zy Alexander to show he deserves to play in the league. He is 6'2" and 190 pounds, and while he lacks elite speed, he does have good technique.
Plus, Alexander spent the last two years of college at LSU going up against SEC wide receivers. The SEC is the closest thing the NFL has to a true minor league system, and if Alexander succeeded in that conference, he might do the same in the NFL.
He is not the best athlete, as he was timed in the 40-yard dash at 4.56. His vertical leap was 31.5 inches. Both of those numbers, compared to other NFL cornerback prospects, are underwhelming. Potentially, some of that is that he might still not be fully recovered from tearing his ACL in 2023.
He was able to play in 11 games last season, however. He has two interceptions and four passes broken up, as well as 2.5 tackles for loss. He is an excellent tackler and solid in run support. His passer rating allowed in 2024 was an astonishingly low 53.2. Just 20 of the 46 passes thrown his way were completed.
His length and high football IQ also allow him to get in a great position on deep routes. Head coach Mike Macdonald likes smart players, and that is what Alexander brings. If he makes the 2025 roster, it shouldn't come as a surprise.
