Buccaneers coach accidentally handed Seahawks OC a winning blueprint

But what did he say?

The Seattle Seahawks have a lot of trust in new offensive coordinator Brian Fleury. The team has to because even though the new OC hasn't ever called plays in his career, he is now being tasked with keeping a Super Bowl-winning offense just as efficient as it was last season.

Fleury does have a lot of experience with different position groups, and that should help him to be a first-time OC. He might also heed the words that Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles offered former Seahawks coach Dave Canales after Canales became the offensive coordinator for the Bucs in 2023.

According to a recent article by The Athletic (subscription required), Bowles told Canales, "Don’t worry about being a certain way. Let it rip. Be yourself. Be aggressive. Look for your moments to knock ‘em dead."

Most likely, Seattle head coach Mike Macdonald has told Fleury the same thing, if possibly in different words. The new OC does have some advantages in helping him be good at his job quickly, though.

For one, he has already worked with Seahawks starting quarterback Sam Darnold. Both were with the San Francisco 49ers when Darnold was a backup QB in the Bay in 2023. Darnold knows the system that Fleury will run because it will be the scheme that Kyle Shanahan ran in San Francisco.

The system appears to be a great fit for Seattle's quarterback, which will make Fleury's job in calling plays easier. As Bowles said, however, the new OC will need to make sure he doesn't hold back from anything. He needs to trust himself and the quarterback, and that should turn into success.

Is Brian Fleury going to make mistakes in his first season with the Seattle Seahawks? Of course. Even the most seasoned of coaches, including the brilliant Mike Macdonald, makes mistakes. It will be learning from them quickly and then adjusting that will make-or-break Fleury.

What is clear from anyone who talks with the offensive coordinator is that he is exceedingly intelligent. He knows what he wants to do, and he understands why he wants to do it. He can take from his past football lives, which include things such as a tight ends coach and linebackers coach (with the Cleveland Browns), and use that against a defense.

Plus, likely more than the Seahawks' OC in 2025, Klint Kubiak (now the Las Vegas Raiders head coach), Brian Fleury will get Seattle's tight ends involved and make them a passing game threat. That is, as long as Fleury learns to just let it rip.
