It wasn't too long ago that Cooper Kupp and Aaron Donald were teammates on a Super Bowl-winning Los Angeles Rams team in 2022. The two future Hall of Famers played seven seasons together for the Rams before Donald eventually retired, and Kupp changed teams.Â
Now with the Seattle Seahawks, Kupp recently became a two-time champion, helping Seattle defeat his former team in an epic NFC conference finals matchup to reach the Super Bowl. Kupp has already faced his former team three times since arriving in Seattle, and will face them at least twice more next season.Â
The next two meetings between the Seahawks and Rams will look quite different, however, as far as rosters are concerned, especially with the Rams after a few massive offseason moves. What's scary is that they may not be done thanks to the rumors regarding Donald. That said, Seahawks fans may not have to worry about anything, as Kupp has seemingly taken care of it.
Seattle Seahawks' Cooper Kupp has already spoken to Aaron Donald about a possible NFL return
The Rams have to be considered one of the most improved teams as it stands today, given their offseason acquisitions so far. As if they weren't already one of the NFL's best teams heading into next season, they're certainly all that much better now.Â
Before landing Myles Garrett this week in a trade, the Rams also traded for All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie and another excellent former Kansas City Chiefs champion, Jaylen Watson. McDuffie and Watson coming over were big moves already, then the Rams add Garrett; could another big addition be coming?Â
During the Rams' press conference introducing Garrett to the media, head coach Sean McVay was asked about a potential Donald return, and he hinted he would welcome that scenario as long as Donald could shake off the rust. Donald's return to the league and to the Rams would be epic, but it could also have massive implications for the Seahawks.Â
That said, if Seahawks fans are hoping a Donald return to the Rams remains a rumor and nothing more, Kupp has their backs. Shortly after the rumors broke, Kupp appeared on The Rich Eisen Show, where he proclaimed to have already snuffed out the possibility via text message with his former teammate.
"I already texted him and told him he's not allowed, so we're good," Kupp told Eisen. "I just texted Aaron and said, 'Don't even think about it,' and left it at that. So, we're good. I'm not worried about it, because he's not. Because I told him he can't. I already nipped it in the bud. No one has to worry."
Whether Donald heeds Kupp's input is something fun to keep an eye on through the summer. For the NFL's sake, Donald coming out of retirement to join the Rams juggernaut would be exciting. For the Seahawks' sake, it could spell some real trouble, not that Garrett's trade didn't already add its own level of trouble.Â
Kupp's texts with Donald are, of course, all in good fun, but there has to be a part of Kupp that was taking what he sent to Donald seriously. Donald or no Donald, either way, two of the most anticipated clashes next season will be between the Seahawks and the Rams. If Donald is back in the mix, well, talk about truly upping the ante.
