If there is one player who knows how to win and what it takes to win, and the obstacles that come along with that journey, it's Cooper Kupp. The veteran Seattle Seahawks wide receiver has experienced it all in his NFL journey, from winning as an individual to winning as part of a team, and struggling through challenging times.
So, when someone of Kupp's reputation speaks up, there's nothing he won't say that's invaluable.
After the Seahawks first loss of the season, Kupp didn't back away from assessing his team's performance against the Commanders. Kupp pointed to the simple act of execution, and no matter how it's done, things need to be fixed, even this early in the season, according to ESPN's Brady Henderson.
“I think there’s a lot of stuff we left out there that basically we want back,” Kupp said. “But also there’s a mixture of responding to some adversity there. So it’s going to be one of those things. We’re gonna watch the film. This is the NFL. You find a few plays there at the end, and maybe the result’s different. It doesn’t change the fact that four quarters of the game has been played and there’s stuff that needs to get fixed one way or another."
Seattle Seahawks veteran Cooper Kupp challenges his team to regroup and be better
There's absolutely no reason to panic—the Seattle Seahawks lost the first of what will likely be a few on the season; they weren't going to go 17-0. That said, their Week 3 loss to the Washington Commanders was unsettling for a few reasons, and it wasn't the kind of loss Seattle would want if they had to take one.
In a 33-31 road loss marred by defensive lapses and offensive mistakes, the Seahawks are still treating it like a loss that should never have happened. Why? Because who they were on Sunday in Washington is not who they are, especially on defense. The whole team suffered for it.
You could argue that despite Sam Darnold's turnovers and Jadarian Price's fumble, the Seahawks offense was clicking on all cylinders. That pick-six, though, made the difference in the game in terms of scoring. Some things went right, but more went wrong.
Kupp's comments above were as straightforward as they get, but Kupp is correct with every word. The good news for the Seahawks is that, because they're so good, it's hard to imagine them losing another game like the one against the Commanders.
Will they drop another one? Sure. In fact, they may lose 3-4 games this season, but Mike Macdonald will do everything in his power to keep it from happening like this. The fact that these Seahawks are incredibly disciplined in mind and spirit is another good sign that Kupp won't have to make a statement like this again.
This is "The Dark Side" defense we're talking about, after all. They're almost certain to bounce back big next week. Hopefully, Darnold follows suit. Now sitting at 2-1 in the NFC West, the Seahawks are looking up only at the San Francisco 49ers, who are a perfect 3-0.
Seattle welcomes the Los Angeles Chargers at Lumen Field in Week 4. Given how poorly Justin Herbert is playing these days, this might be the best bounce-back opportunity the Seahawks' defense will get all season.
