Cowboys' golden opportunity to lure Deion Sanders has Seahawks draft ripple effects

So...there is a chance.

Anything is possible in the NFL. There is as good a chance as any, now that the Dallas Cowboys and head coach Mike McCarthy have parted ways, that Dallas owner Jerry Jones will decide to interview former Cowboy Deion Sanders for the head coaching position. This might not be a smart move for Jones, but it certainly would be great for public relations. It could also affect the Seattle Seahawks.

Sanders, currently the head coach of the University of Colorado Buffalos, is in a unique position. He has proven to be a decent college coach after not having much coaching experience at all. He also is the father and coach of one of the most highly-prized quarterbacks available in 2025. If Shedeur gets drafted, he has to go to the team that took him, but Deion might have some sway.

In a dream world (and in the NFL, these things have a way of figuring themselves out) for Deion, the Cowboys would hire him as their new head coach. Dallas is currently set to draft at number 12 in the first round. As opposed to the 2024 NFL draft, there are far fewer quarterback-needy teams in front of pick 12. Potentially, only five.

Potential of Cowboys chasing Deion Sanders as head coach could affect the Seattle Seahawks' draft

There also might only be two quarterbacks who enter the draft with a first-round grade. One is Shedeur Sanders, and the other is Miami's Cam Ward. It is conceivable that the Cowboys decide to stick with starter Dak Prescott through 2025 and then release him or trade him in 2026. By that season, moving on from Prescott saves Dallas money.

The situation could be that Sanders is hired by the Cowboys, Dallas moves up in the draft to take Shedeur, the young quarterback sits for a season, and then Dallas releases Prescott in 2026 and Deion decides to put his son in as QB1. Is it likely? Who knows? But it is possible.

So how would this affect the Seahawks? There is a chance that general manager John Schneider decides he is ready to choose a quarterback high in the 2025 draft and replace veteran Geno Smith. If Schneider has made that decision, he only has two quarterbacks to choose from who might be safe bets to be decent in the NFL, Ward and Sanders.

The Cowboys adding Deion as head coach, which, again, could end up happening due to the relationship between Jerry Jones, the Cowboys, and Deion, makes them choosing Shedeur more likely. One of the top two picks could be Colorado's Travis Hunter, but the Cowboys are less likely to have a chance to trade for him.

Dallas could be willing to move up a bunch to grab Shedeur, meaning the Seahawks would have to try to move up to get Ward. What is most probable is that the Seahawks are out of luck in taking Ward or Shedeur Sanders because both will likely be gone high enough that Seattle has no chance to take them even if the Seahawks move up. Deion would make sure of that with Shedeur.
