When sacrifice is your compass, all other offers are simply not good enough; Derick Hall is a perfect example of this, after he just signed a three-year, $42 million contract extension with the Seattle Seahawks earlier this week.
The three-year linebacker, who carries with him a remarkable story directly connected to his mother wherever he goes, can now add three more years to his NFL journey with the Seahawks. Hall would have hit the free agency market next year had the Seahawks not moved on from him beforehand. Now, Hall is one more key piece they don't have to worry about.
Hall's numbers don't exactly explode off the stats sheet, but his impact on the Seahawks' defense is can't-miss, and his lockeroom presence is just as important.
Derick Hall was willing to sacrifice whatever he had to stay with the Seattle Seahawks
Hall could have opted to test the free-agent market next year, despite just winning a Super Bowl and his affection for Seattle. Instead, Hall chose to put pen to paper now, and his recent comments (and confident predictions) should give Seahawks fans reason to believe in his future in Seattle.
Hall was the Seahawks' second-round selection in the 2023 NFL Draft, and the 37th pick overall. In his first three seasons in the league, he's recorded 10 sacks and 105 total tackles. Hall believes he can do considerably better, and the Seahawks apparently agree, entrusting him with three more seasons to continue growing and developing.
With a solid fourth season, Hall would have been a top linebacker target in free agency next year; there's no doubt about it. That said, considering his latest comments following his extension, it sounds like Hall had no intention of waiting it out. Furthermore, it sounds like Hall expects the Seahawks to not only be contenders for many years but also to win more Super Bowls.
“I know we’re going to win a lot of games and a lot of championships here,” Hall said during a Seahawks media session. “So, I’m willing to sacrifice whatever everybody else thought I’d be willing to make to be here and with this team.”
Hall is certainly right about the Seahawks winning games; they're one of the best teams in the NFL and will be a Super Bowl favorite next season. Everything about the Seahawks screams contention; they're too great a team not to be contenders.
As for the Super Bowls, however, it's incredibly hard to win one, never mind multiple. Then again, this current Seahawks squad has the feel of a multi-championship team over the next several years.
As for Hall's numbers, he wants to see more from himself, and these are the words that should excite Seahawks fans even more.
“There’s so much more for me, and I know there’s so much greater heights that I can go to in my game,” Hall said. “It’s just continuing to work towards that every single day.”
Hall is already a fan favorite, and it's clear that head coach Mike Macdonald and general manager John Schneider love what Hall brings to the table. Hall has everything he needs to become a double-digit sack getter in the NFL, and he may have his best season yet coming up; another reason for Seahawks fans to get on board with what Hall just said.
