DK Metcalf's next team after trade request is painfully obvious

This would not be good.

This week has not been an overly fun one for Seattle Seahawks fans. The team has released several players, though none of them more important than wide receiver Tyler Lockett. On Wednesday, Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reported that wideout DK Metcalf has requested a trade. There is a real chance that beginning in 2025, Metcalf and Lockett are both gone.

For Lockett, he might be done playing. He will turn 33 years old near the beginning of the 2025 season, and he has his first child on the way and a successful real estate business. If he wants to play, some team will pick him up, but he also gave himself up quite a bit after catching the ball last season. He might make a business decision to retire.

Metcalf, though, is only 27 years old and should have several years left to play. He is one of the few players Seattle has that could bring back real value in a trade. Perhaps only he and cornerback Devon Witherspoon bring back much of anything. The question with Metcalf is, how much?

Seattle Seahawks trading DK Metcalf to the Green Bay Packers would make complete sense

Recently, Green Bay Packers expert Freddie Boston suggested that Metcalf's asking price could be lower after the San Francisco 49ers shipped wide receiver Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders for only a fifth-round pick in return. Metcalf is younger than Samuel and more productive as a receiver, so his value should be much higher than that.

Ironically, Metcalf has a decent chance of finding that the next uniform he wears is one for Green Bay. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Metcalf would prefer to be traded to a contender. Of course, the receiver can request a trade, the Seahawks have to honor that (which the team has said it would), but where Metcalf goes is up to Seattle working out a deal with another team.

Still, the Packers might make sense for all parties. Green Bay is certainly in a position to be a contender, and they have a young quarterback who simply needs more weapons. Metcalf would be a fit in the Packers' offense as well.

Green Bay has the number 23 overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft, while their second-round choice does not come until pick 54. The first-round choice is late enough that maybe the Packers are willing to give that up for a player of Metcalf's ability. Green Bay also has nearly $40 million in cap room this offseason and much more next offseason.

In other words, they can afford DK Metcalf. Not all other contenders can do that.

Metcalf will want an extension after 2025, but that should not be a problem for Green Bay. The problem for the Seahawks could be if the team doesn't get the first-round pick back. If Green Bay only offers the second-round choice, then they might need to throw in wide receiver Romeo Doubs as well. That might also make sense, as Doubs will be on the final year of his rookie contract and affordable for Seattle.

While general manager John Schneider might not want to work a trade for Metcalf, the Seahawks would be trading the receiver to a contender (which he wants), and Seattle could get a decent return. The only scenario that makes the Packers the most obvious team for Metcalf to be traded to.
