The Seattle Seahawks still have a little money to spend in free agency. Exactly how much is unknown because sites such as Over the Cap and Spotrac have not yet been able to factor in the precise details of the contracts for quarterback Sam Darnold, wide receiver Cooper Kupp, and defensive DeMarcus Lawrence. Those will take a chunk out of what the team seemingly has left.
But nearly every team has the same issue, and few have a lot of money left. In other words, Seattle probably could still competitively bid against anyone else for a player. The Seahawks still have glaring needs along the offensive line, but those are probably not going to be solved in free agency. General manager John Schneider has made no real move to do so.
Seattle might have a position group that is otherwise pretty good, but adding another talented player could make the unit great. This is the case at cornerback as the team has the sensational Devon Witherspoon, a good but inconsistent Riq Woolen, and then no truly proven CB3.
ESPN names the Seahawks as one of the landing spots for cornerback Stephon Gilmore
That spot is important in head coach Mike Macdonald's defense because the coach often uses Witherspoon in the slot to help disguise alignments. Woolen in only an outside corner.
There could be potential for Schneider to bring in one of the top remaining corners, and ESPN's Bill Barnwell has a good idea of which one. In a recent article about best fits for some players still waiting to sign, Barnwell has the Seahawks among three possible suitors for veteran Stephon Gilmore.
Gilmore has had a nearly Hall of Fame-worthy career. He might still get there, and he is unique in that he has continued to play at a high level into his 30s. He is smart, knows how to position himself well, and uses his physicality to disrupt routes. How much he has left is anyone's guess, but he has shown no indication he is slowing down all that much.
Is he a true shutdown corner now? No. But in Macdonald's scheme Gilmore would not need to be. Plus, he is a well-rounded player who is exceedingly good in run support. He is going to give up a big play sometimes, but his average yards allowed per catch was the lowest of his career in 2024 (10.0).
According to Spotrac, Gilmore's market value in 2025 would be $5.3 million. He would certainly be worth that amount in a Seahawks defense that already has Woolen and Witherspoon. There would also be the added benefit of Gilmore's high-end veteran experience being helpful to Woolen. Woolen has all the physical skills to be consistently great, but Gilmore might help him become even better.
