Geno Smith could have owned his Seattle Seahawks world, but his greater view got the better of him, it seems. He took over for Russell Wilson before the 2022 season and led Seattle's offense for three years. Now he's back with his first team, the New York Jets, and he might be rebuilding his reputation along with a wide receiver who needs a fix.
Smith is now starting for the Jets. In minicamp, he is impressing, but with the help of wide receiver Adonai Mitchell, whom the Indianapolis Colts gave up on after one season, plus, even though the receiver was a second-round pick. Smith and Mitchell are misfit toys who might have finally found the island they needed to be on.
Smith took over for Wilson, of course, after Wilson had worked his way, likely accidentally, out of playing for the Seahawks as he wanted to have general manager John Schneider and head coach Pete Carroll fired. Instead, Seattle fired Wilson via a trade to the Denver Broncos.
Former Seattle Seahawks QB1 Geno Smith might have found the receiver he needs with the New York Jets
The deal worked out eventually for Schneider and his team as they won the Super Bowl last season. That was after Smith was traded, too. He made far too many mistakes at key times in important games to be relied upon to lead the offense to sustained greatness. Instead, he was moved to the Las Vegas Raiders, where he flamed out after a season.
He was dealt to the Jets, instead of the other option, the Raiders, releasing him since he was clearly not the long-term option at quarterback, and New York should be his final team. That is, if you love symmetry. Smith began his career with the Jets, wasn't successful, and then will likely end his career with the same team, where he might also not find success.
What's impressive is that in practice, at least, Smith is finding a connection with Adonai Mitchell, whose last team also gave up on him. Both the quarterback and receiver are trying to find respect after not showing they deserve as much with their previous teams.
Everyone likes a redemption story, right? Well, maybe not so much for Seattle Seahawks fans with Geno Smith. While he was nice in year one, he had a hot temper, and then flipped off 12s at Lumen Field in the preseason last year when the Raiders traveled to play the Seahawks. Any love remaining for the quarterback probably faded quickly.
According to The Athletic's (subscription required) Jets reporter, Zack Rosenblatt, Smith and Mitchell are becoming a connection fans should notice. Maybe both players are finding their footing in the NFL and will get the respect they crave. For Geno Smith, however, he burned through his chance with the Seattle Seahawks to do so, and his NFL career might soon close.
